Leigh Bowery
Bat Girls and Acid Boys
The Spontaneous Drawings of Leigh Bowery & Friends
Edited by Richard Torry, foreword by Johny Trunk
During the vibrant club scene of 1980s and early 1990s London, a group of young, queer friends, including the renowned Australian designer, performer, and provocateur Leigh Bowery and his Minty bandmates, gathered at Richard Torry's Soho flat before heading out. To amuse themselves, they created “exquisite corpses,” a Surrealist-inspired technique of collaboratively drawing wildly eccentric characters. The 120 images compiled from the Richard Torry archive capture their sharp wit, psychedelic absurdity, and sometimes biting humor, offering a vivid, exaggerated glimpse into the era’s defining styles, fashions, and obsessions.
