Since the mid-1960’s, Ed Ruscha has been producing paintings of satirical, deadpan, and slightly odd words and phrases on vacant backdrops. This towel features Ruscha's 1983 oil painting on canvas, "The Study of Friction and Wear on Mating Surfaces."

This towel is part of the Artist Towel Series 2009 sponsored by Target® with Art Production Fund. The series is part of WOW (Works on Whatever), a unique collection of everyday items designed by artists to bring art off the walls and into homes. This year's series features 60x70 inch cotton towels designed by acclaimed artists Ed Ruscha, Raymond Pettibon, and Karen Kilimnik.
